Rio Largo Stud was founded with a group of four mares and two stallions, imported from Portugal, with the aim of introducing to South Africa the Lusitano breed. This group of animals was selected from some of the most prized blood lines in Portugal namely; Xaquiro, Universo and Opus-72.
Spartacus, a son of Xaquiro and today recognised as one of Portugal’s best dressage horses has sired the filly Castanhola, one of the first generation of foals born at Rio Largo Stud. |
Ulisses and Xis, the two stud stallions at Rio Largo are the only two licensed Lusitano stallions in South Africa registered in the Portuguese stud book.
In the same way as the Lusitano Breed is establishing itself across the world as an exceptional sport horse, Rio Largo Stud hopes that in years to come South Africa will be able to reap the benefits of our efforts. |
